    WNC Microgrid Resiliency Project - Powering Preparedness through Microgrid Technology

    Project Summary

    In collaboration with Land of Sky Regional Council (LOSRC), NC Sustainable Energy Association (NCSEA), Footprint Project (FP) and a network of regional partners, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) State Energy Office (SEO) is investing $5 million in permanent and mobile microgrids that will provide accessible power in the wake of future weather disasters.

    Overview of Projects

    Stationary Solar + Battery Microgrids

    • Engineering, procurement, and construction of 24 stationary solar + storage microgrids for resilience hubs across 6 counties: Avery, Buncombe, Madison, Mitchell, Rutherford, Yancey

     

    "Beehive" Mobile Microgrids

    • Develop 2 mobile “Beehive” microgrid hubs to serve as regional clean tech lending libraries.
      • 1 based in Western North Carolina
      • 1 based in Eastern North Carolina

  • Beehive technologies include:

    Power

    • Portable, mobile and stationary solar power generation systems (200W-1mW)
    • Portable, mobile and stationary battery storage systems (1kWh - 1mWh+)
    • Hybridized generator technologies (gas and diesel, wind and solar, hydrogen, etc)

    Water

    • Water generation and filtration (atmospheric water generators, water collection systems, reverse osmosis etc)
    • Sanitation and human waste management systems

    Shelter

    • HVAC systems and heat pumps
    • Insulation materials
    • Modular temporary shelter construction

    Mobility

    • Electric vehicles of various shapes and sizes

    Connectivity

    • GPS & remote monitoring
